Photos: Black Geeks of Dragon*Con

I’m a geek so for me going Dragon*Con in Atlanta is almost a religious experience. This was my fourth year there and there was no shortage of things to do or people to see.

As always, I was impressed with the number of ‘black geeks’ in attendance. Don’t get me wrong, there is no separation there because at Dragon*Con all geeks were created equal but it is always nice to see some geeks of color. It gives me a chance to tell my friends and family that I’m not the only one. 🙂

Here’s a look at a few of the black geeks of Dragon*Con 2012.

  1. As one of Dragon*Con's moderators and auctioneers over the years, I have found the inclusion of African Americans into our (D*C's) conventions a necessary equation in the diversity of universal fandom. Not only have we been aware of such events over the decades, we have always been a part of it. While hosting a Stan Lee panel on Friday, I made many humorous comments as to the lack of Blacks in the comic pages in which he responded by naming the ones that were. I continued with not having ME as a comic character in which he cited my resemblance to Nick Fury, Luke Cage and T'Challa. All a lie in the continuous humor my adoptive father (I'm Marc LEE he's Stan!) showed a gracious audience.

If you would allow me a few more minutes of reading, I have hosted conventions INTERNATIONALLY for 30 years and have definitely noticed a lack of us in the beginning but since then, we have increased our numbers with glorious examples of cosplay (we called it costume contest or masquerading back then) and am proud to see my people making themselves known moreso than before.

    Thank you for your time.

  2. I am really glad you put this together. I have 2 kids (22 y/o girl and 13 y/o boy) who are mixed. My son was concerned there wasn't enough black people costuming. I will definitely show this to him. Thank you!!

  3. Thanks for the for the comment, Marc. I actually watched your panel with Stan on DCTV, you did a great job.

  4. Ha! You got me twice! I'm the Pinup by the Pool and Captain Marvel! BTW, my mom got a kick out of these pictures. Thanks for being at DC!
